What Skincare Products Dermatologists Recommend – And Use

Want the gift of beauty this year? We polled our favorite dermatologists for their best skincare recommendations – and what’s worth the splurge 🙂

Dear Santa -

We’ve been very good this year. Please give us fewer dark circles and skin as plump as a baby’s bottom.
Thanks,
The TrueveLab Team

Looking for last-minute gifts for loved ones or for yourself? (You deserve it!)

Here at TrueveLab, skincare + data-driven solutions make us GIDDY. So, we polled our favorite dermatologists for their skincare recommendations – and what’s on THEIR Christmas lists this year.

Skincare Products

DEJ from Revision – “It is a growth factor cream that sucked in the little fat pads under my eyes like a pair of Spanx.” – Dr. Darren Casey.  (Dr. Amy Kim agrees: “Revision’s DEJ eye cream is my favorite. I have tried a lot …[and this] can help both upper and lower eyelids. Use it every night for the best results.”

SkinMedica’s TNS serum –  “If I could only buy one luxury product it would be Skin Medica’s TNS serum. Studies show this is one of, if not the most effective, topical agents for reversing the aging process.”  – Dr. Jeffery Dover

Latisse – “This product makes your eyes shine with lovely lashes?” – Dr. Darren Casey

Retinoids – This was the ONE on which everyone agreed! Opt for a prescription from your doctor (ranging from Tazarotene, which is the strongest, to Altreno, which is the gentlest), or OTC versions such as Differin gel or Skin Better’s AlphaRet

Gadgets

Mount Lai Jade Roller – “To reduce under-eye puffiness. They come in many colors and work best if kept in the refrigerator. “ – Dr. Darren Casey

Dr. Dennis Gross LED mask – “[This mask] provides both red and blue LED lights. The blue light helps the redness in your face as well as rosacea, and the red light helps the brown spots. The price point is reasonable at approximately $400 as other LED sources can cost more.” – Dr. Amy Kim

Other Gifts

Clinique’s Chubby stick color moisturized lip balm – “It is rich with Shea butter and great for dry winter lips.” – Dr. Darren Casey

Fragrances – “I splurge on my fragrance wardrobe. It sets the mood for my day and creates the personal environment I share with patients and friends. [I love] brands like Penhalingtons’ Halfeti or Endymion and French Maison Francis Kurkdijan Petit Matin. A squirt of a good perfume is like an escape to a far-off destination.” – Dr. Darren Casey (True, perfume isn’t skincare, but we loved this too much to leave it out).

Silk Pillow – Wondering if it’s worth the $$? We dove into the science, here

Procedures at the Dermatologist

Peel – “Every year I get a superficial chemical peel in fall or winter to get rid of the sins of summer. Usually, a Jessner peel or a 20 percent TCA peel.” – Dr. Darren Casey

Microneedling – “Microneedling is great for improving skin tone, texture, and fine lines. Starting early can help with signs of aging. If you repeat every 4-6 weeks, after 2-3 treatments you’ll begin to see results. This is great for people in their 20s, 30s, and 40s who want non-procedural options with little risk, is cost-effective, and produces a good response.” – Dr. Brian Raphael

Jeffery S. Dover, MD, FRCPC – Associate Professor of Clinical Dermatology, Yale University School of Medicine. Co-Director of SkinCare Physicians, Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. Connect with Dr. Dover’s medical practice on Instagram @skincarephysicians, Facebook at  SkinCare Physicians, or on Twitter @SCPderm

Dr. Darren L. Casey – dermatologist, dermatologic surgeon, and CEO at Atlanta Dermatology. Connect with Dr. Casey’s medical practice on Instagram @atlanta_derm.

Brian Raphael, MD, FAAD – Board-Certified Dermatologist, fellowship-trained Dermatologic Surgeon in Cosmetic dermatology and Mohs Micrographic Surgery, and is the founder of Empire Dermatology in East Syracuse, New York. Connect with Dr. Raphael’s medical practices on Instagram @empirederm and @empireaesthetics, Facebook at Empire Dermatology PLLC, or on Twitter @empirederm.

Dr. Amy Kim –  dermatologist, Mohs surgeon, and COO of MetroDerm in Atlanta, GA. Connect with Dr. Kim’s medical practice on Instagram @metrodermatlantaplastics, Facebook at The Center for Plastic Surgery at MetroDerm, P.C., or on Twitter @MetroDermATL.

Happy splurging, beautiful.
